Shopping behaviour is changing permanently

Consumers shop less often, faster and in a more structured way in Corona times. And this will remain so, shows a new study for which Bonsai cooperated with CodeCheck, an app for checking ingredients in products.

The Covid 19 crisis acts as a catalyst for trends in shopping behaviour. Conscious consumption and the desire for more sustainability were already relevant before the pandemic. However, the importance of these topics has increased significantly. This is reflected in the scanning behaviour of the users of the CodeCheck app as well as in the survey: 86 percent of consumers have changed their purchasing behaviour because of Corona. 40 percent assume that the changes will be at least partly permanent. Above all, the respondents want to shop less frequently, more regionally and more consciously.

"We also see in our other studies that sustainability and ethical consumption represent an important pillar for the trade of the future," says Jasmin Pampuch, Research Consultant at Bonsai. "We ourselves were surprised to see that the retail sector is also already working to support this trend." However, according to Jasmin Pampuch, retail is facing a real balancing act: "On the one hand, to meet the desire for ethical and sustainable consumption, and on the other hand, at the same time, to make offers for more and more households in precarious situations."
