Donation Monitor 2024: More money for a good cause!

People in Germany will donate six billion euros privately in 2024. This is shown by the new study "German Donation Monitor 2024", which was recently conducted by Bonsai Public.

Good news in the run-up to Christmas: private donors are giving six billion euros to good causes this year - 200 million euros more than last year. This does not even include large donations over 1,500 euros.

Donations for child and youth welfare are particularly common (28% of donors). The second most important donation purpose is immediate and emergency aid in (civil) war and disaster areas; animal welfare is in third place. These are the results of the representative German Donation Monitor 2024, for which Bonsai Public surveyed 6,039 people online in October and November. The study is published annually by the German Fundraising Association (DFV).

"Despite inflation and poor economic forecasts, people are showing great solidarity with those who are even worse off thanks to the slight increase in donations," emphasizes Jan Borcherding, Head of Bonsai Public, who has been in charge of the German Donation Monitor for twenty-five years. "There is further potential for the future," says Larissa Probst, Managing Director of the German Fundraising Association, "because 29% of current non-donors can definitely imagine donating in the future."

Donor rate increases slightly

In 2024, more than half of people in Germany donated privately. The proportion of donors in the total population rose to 50.2% in 2024 (in 2023, the donor rate was 48.6%). This is particularly pleasing for the organizations that rely on donations: Younger people in particular are donating more: in the so-called Gen Y (born between 1980 and 1995), the rate rose from 46% to 52% within a year. And those who donate will also dig a little deeper into their pockets in 2024, giving an average of 174 euros, four euros more than in the previous year.

Volunteering is a strong pillar of civil society

For many people, donating is not enough - they also actively support good causes. Overall, 42% of people in Germany are involved in voluntary work. Among donors, as many as 53% are also active volunteers.

About the German Donation Monitor 2024

Every year - for the 30th time in 2024 - the German Donation Monitor provides reliable and comparable information about the donation market (donation rate, donation amount, donation purposes, attitude towards donations) and determines the awareness of participating organizations and their image. In 2024, 6,039 people in Germany between the ages of 16 and 70 were surveyed online for the German Donation Monitor. The study is conducted by the market research institute Bonsai GmbH, which is also responsible for the "Otto Trend Study 2023 on Ethical Consumption" and the "Values Index", the largest social media study on social change. The partner of the German Donation Monitor is the German Central Institute for Social Issues (DZI). Every year, the DZI forecasts the total amount of donations in Germany, including large donations. It amounted to 12.8 billion euros in 2023.
